The legendary stone sits near Glencoe, close to Clachaig Gully in Scotland. The story attached to this remarkable boulder is that of a local hunter named Colin Campbell. One day, after returning home from a long day in the rugged Scottish lands, Colin noticed his talented and beloved hunting dog acting strangely. With loud howls it seemed distressed, adamant about something inside the house, leading Colin inside. The dog led him into the house, only to find a large, intimidating man, readying himself to attack. With his hunting instincts kicking in, Colin’s dog sprang to counter the invader, saving Colin’s life. But, tragically it succumbed to the fatal wounds inflicted by the intruder. Out of respect for the brave dog, Colin carried a great boulder from the River Coe and placed it above its grave. He etched the outline of a dog into the stone, creating a lasting memorial. Today, this Dog Stone still stands, serving both as a testament to the bravery of Colin’s dog and a reminder of the loyalty and courage our four-legged friends can have. Visitors to the area often look for the stone, and pay respect to the noble creature that sacrificed itself all those years ago. It’s an important part of the local folklore, as it demonstrates the bond between man and his best friend, even in the face of extreme danger. It has become a symbol of ultimate loyalty and sacrifice that continues to captivate the hearts of the locals and the tourists alike.
