The Legendary Green Isle of the Glencoe Lochan

Hidden amidst the stunning vistas of the Scottish Highlands, near a place nestled at the geographical coordinates of latitude 56.674720 and longitude -5.082890, lies a captivating tale of love, melancholy and a solitary man’s attempt to evoke the familiar in a foreign land. This is the story of our the protagonist, Lord Strathcona, and his deep-rooted love for his native land and his wife Isabella. Born in Scotland, Lord Strathcona moved to Canada, working for the Hudson Bay Company where he met and fell in love with Isabella. After marriage, he returned to Scotland, making his home in Glencoe at a place that came to be known as Glencoe Lochan. Isabella, born and brought up in the wilderness of Canada, found it hard to adjust to the weather and the landscapes of Scotland that were so different from her native Canada. Strathcona was troubled by his wife’s melancholy and in order to make Isabella feel more at home, he ordered the transformation of part of the estate into a Canadian landscape. Workers were set on to plant indigenous North American tree species around the lake. A legend also suggests that he had a small island built in the middle of the lake symbolizing ‘Green Isle’, a classic element of Canadian lakes. Isabella’s melancholy deepened and eventually she passed away in her Scottish home. The local folks say that the Lord’s spirit still treads the shores of the Lochan seeking solace in its Canadian resemblance. Nowadays, the place is known for its beautiful trail walks and the little island amidst the Lochan, widely referred by locals as ‘The Green Isle’ is a gentle reminder of a tale of untold love weaved meticulously with indigenous Canadian flora, beautifully preserved to this day.
