The Legend of the Hairy Hands is a ghost story or modern folklore that rose out of a series of alleged incidents on a two-mile-long stretch of road between Postbridge and Two Bridges, in the heart of Dartmoor, Devon, UK in the early 20th century. To date, the eerie stories of this road continue to fascinate visitors and locals alike. In Dartmoor, the roads can be unforgiving, twisting and turning through the rough and wild terrain. The tale of the Hairy Hands may just be an exaggerated cautionary tale to keep drivers safe on these hazardous roads. The story has it that the road is haunted by a pair of disembodied hairy hands that appear suddenly, grab at the steering wheel of a moving car or the handlebars of a motorcycle, and then force the victim off the road. In some cases, the hands are described as invisible, being only felt by the driver; in other tales, they are seen on the wheel turning it hard over. The first report of the Hairy Hands was in 1925, when an army officer riding his motorcycle along the road, reported that a pair of hairy hands closed over his own on the bike’s handlebars, forcing him off the road. The officer firmly believed that he had survived an attempted road accident by a supernatural power. Thereafter, there were more reports, such as a woman who reported being able to repel the hands by making the sign of the cross, and several accidents due to inexplicable reasons, where the drivers and passengers survived to describe the hairy hands forcing them off the road. Even today, this story continues to be shared and the roadside cross memorializing the first recorded incident remains a stark reminder of the Hairy Hands that might roam the road.
