Chetham Library is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world, located in the heart of Manchester, situated close to the coordinates provided. It is a place steeped in history, beauty, and mystery, none more so than the legend of its ghost. The tale of the Chetham Library Ghost dates back to the English Civil War. The War, which saw brother torn against brother, and a country plunged into chaos, serves as the backdrop to this haunting tale. The library, founded in 1653, was once the residence of a Royalist named Humphrey Chetham. During the height of the civil war, Chetham, a well-respected citizen, was visited by two parliamentary officers seeking his support. Rather than pledge his allegiance to their cause, he instead offered them sanctuary at his residence while they waited out the civil war. They took up residence in the Baronial Hall, which is now the Library’s reading room. For many years they lived together in peace, all the while hiding their true allegiances from each other. Yet, as the war escalated, tensions grew and culminated in a fatal duel in the library’s courtyard. To this day, library staff and visitors claim to have witnessed the spectral figures of these two men, eternally locked in combat. Their duel is said to continue, echoing through the centuries, forever swirling around the haunting beauty of Chetham Library. The eerie silence of the library intensifies the sense of otherworldly presence, while the antique, dust-laden books and aged architecture embody the echo of a time long since past.
