The legend of the Buckleming

There exists a local tale in the city of Birmingham, known as the legend of the Buckleming. The Buckleming, depicted as a grotesque and petrifying creature, was said to roam the forests in and around Birmingham during the 1700s. This being was notorious for its ghostly wails, which could be heard in the dead of the night. The origin of the story is somewhat shrouded in mystery, however, it is often used as a cautionary tale, warning children and adults alike to be home before dark. Wandering into the woods after sundown was said to be inviting the Buckleming’s wrath. The Buckleming was allegedly seen wearing a cloak of darkness, with shine-less eyes, and carrying a sinister gleaming blade. These descriptions are shared stories from various people of the city who dared to confront the entity out of thrill or out of simple accident. After the Buckleming’s reign of terror, the residents grew weary and with the help of some illustrious members of the city, they decided to hunt down the creature. The legend states that the courageous city men ventured into the forest, never to be seen again. The calls of the Buckleming ceased, yet the men never returned. This story is passed down from generation to generation, reminding residents of their city’s haunting history. While this tale is viewed as just folklore by many, some mysterious disappearances and strange sounds in present days sometimes reignite the fears of the Buckleming’s existence, keeping the tale alive in the city’s cultural memory.
