The Bătrâna Mountain holds a significant place in Romanian folklore, in particular the Bătrâna Stone from which the mountain gets its name. Legends tell that long ago, an elderly woman lived in a humble abode at the foot of the mountain. Despite her age, the old woman continued to work hard and persevered through the harshness of life. One day, a group of merciless bandits raided the village, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. The old woman, despite her limited strength, defended her home and managed to fend off the attackers. Unfortunately, the struggle took a toll on her frail body, and she passed away sitting, stoic and proud, staring at the mountain range before her. Overwhelmed by her courage and resilience, nature itself, mourning her demise, transformed her into stone, giving us the Bătrâna Stone, representative of the elderly woman’s undying spirit and courage. This stone, as the legend suggests, serves as a constant reminder of human spirit, resilience, and strength. The woman’s undying spirit echoed through the mountains and valleys, and the respect she commanded from the villagers transcended death, making her an immortal part of the Bătrâna Mountain.
