Nestled in the heart of Cologne, Germany, a stone’s throw from the city centre, is the Melaten Cemetery. Established following a decree by Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, the cemetery is as much a place of history as it is a place of rest. The most famous folktale circulating about Melaten revolves around its most notorious inhabitant, the ‘Geist von Melaten,’ or ‘Ghost of Melaten.’ This apparition is said to be the ghost of a young woman, who was buried here sometime in the 1800s. As the story goes, this young woman was engaged to a man she deeply loved. However, shortly before their wedding, she fell ill with a mysterious disease and fell into a coma. Mistakenly presumed dead, she was buried in the cemetery. Her frantic fiancé, not willing to believe she was truly gone, would visit her grave every night. One fateful night, he heard muffled sounds coming from the grave. With heart-pounding terror, he realized his love was not dead but buried alive. Aided by the cemetery custodian, they exhumed the coffin, but it was too late. The woman had succumbed to suffocation. Now, it’s said the ghost of the woman remains eternally trapped within the cemetery and can be seen wandering in her eternal search for her beloved. Passerby at night have reported seeing a woman dressed in white, wandering among the tombstones, crying and calling out for her fiancé. Whether you believe in ghost stories or take them as mere folklore, it’s undeniable that the cemetery elicits an eerie and mystical ambience. Visitors of Melaten are never left untouched by its history and haunting tales..
