The Legend of Lady Hoby and Bisham Abbey

This haunting tale begins during the tumultuous time of the Reformation. When the monasteries were being dissolved, Bisham Abbey was granted by King Henry VIII to his loyal servant, Sir Philip Hoby. After Sir Hoby’s death, his brother, Sir Thomas, married Sir Philip’s widow, Lady Elizabeth Hoby, who soon became the dominant force at Bisham. Lady Hoby was a very strict woman, especially when it came to the education of her children. One day, she discovered that her son, William, was not performing well in his studies. In an act of intense frustration and anger, she beat him so severely that he succumbed to his injuries. The remorseful Lady Hoby could not bear her guilt and eventually died of a broken heart. It is said that since then, her ghost has haunted Bisham Abbey. Eyewitnesses have reported seeing her wringing her ghostly hands in guilt and mourning. The legend stirred locals and visitors for centuries and continues to do so till date.
