One of the most famous stories related to this area is the Legend of Finn McCool and the Giant’s Causeway. According to this tale, Finn McCool, a giant in Celtic mythology and a prominent figure in Irish lore, once became embroiled in a bitter feud with a Scottish giant named Benandonner. In a fit of fury, Finn hurled chunks of earth into the sea, thereby inadvertently forming the Isle of Man. The hole left behind filled with water to create Lough Neagh. In a continued rage, he tore huge hexagonal columns from the Antrim coast to create a causeway to Scotland. Finn then challenged Benandonner to a fight, but when he finally saw the size of his adversary, he hurriedly retreated, terrified by the giant’s immense size. Finn’s clever wife, Oona, quick-thinking, wrapped Finn in swaddling clothes and told Benandonner that Finn was their baby. When the Scottish giant saw the size of the ‘baby’, he became terrified thinking that its father, Finn, must be a truly enormous giant. Benandonner ran back to Scotland, demolishing the causeway behind him so Finn could not follow. Today, the Giant’s Causeway stands as a testament to this legendary battle, with its remarkable hexagonal columns attracting visitors from all over the world.
