The Legend of Dozmary Pool and King Arthur’s Excalibur

Nestled in the heart of Bodmin Moor is a small, unassuming lake known as Dozmary Pool. For centuries, it has beckoned travellers with its silent and timeless beauty. But this tranquil water body holds a secret: it is believed to be the resting place of Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur. Legend has it that after the battle of Camlann where Arthur was fatally wounded, he instructed Sir Bedivere to return his sword to the Lady of the Lake. Bedivere, entranced by the beauty and magic of Excalibur, twice failed to fulfil his leader’s request and lied about completing the task. Frustrated, Arthur asked Bedivere to describe what he saw when he threw the weapon into the water. When Bedivere couldn’t reply, Arthur knew he was lying. Only with the King’s harsh reprimand did Bedivere finally cast Excalibur into Dozmary Pool. As the sword hit the water, a hand – the Lady of the Lake – rose to seize it, brandished it thrice, and drew it beneath the moor’s dark surface. Up to this day, locals and visitors often tell tales centered on Dozmary Pool’s mystical association with King Arthur and the enchanted Excalibur. It remains shrouded in mystery and continues to captivate the minds of those who hear its story. Whether the story holds true or is simply a figment of ancient imagination, the allure of Dozmary Pool remains, tying the land to its myth-laden past and keeping the spirit of King Arthur’s legend alive.
