One of the most reputedly haunted castles in England, Berry Pomeroy stands in the small village of Berry Pomeroy, close to the coordinates provided, in Devon County, England. Constructed in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family, the castle eventually fell into the hands of the Duke of Somerset. Its imposing towers and beautiful scenery are shrouded in chilling ghost tales and folklore, that have their roots firmly ingrained in the castle’s rich history. Two particular ghosts are often spoken of. The White Lady, said to be the spirit of Margaret Pomeroy, roams the dungeons and the castle ramparts, haunting the dark corners of the fortress where she was supposedly imprisoned by her jealous sister Eleanor. Legend has it that Margaret was envied by Eleanor for her beauty, and in a fit of rage, Eleanor imprisoned Margaret in the dungeons where she starved to death. The White Lady is a sad specter, forever wandering the castle grounds, mourning her cruel fate. Then there’s the Blue Lady who is supposedly the spirit of a Norman Pomeroy. She is said to beckon to men from one of the castle towers, luring them to their deaths. The castle has a sinister reputation due to these stories, with tales of unease and dread felt by those who visit it. Despite the stunning, sprawling landscapes and romantic ruins, a bone-chilling eeriness hangs in the air that is hard to ignore. The fascinating history and terrifying tales combine to make Berry Pomeroy Castle an unforgettable slice of English folklore.
