The Ghostly Goings-On of Moreton House

Moreton House, located in the small town of Bideford in North Devon, is steeped in history and mystery. Fondly known as the ‘haunted house of North Devon’, it carries an eerie tale that has survived through the whispers of the town for over a century, which tells of ghostly apparitions and eerily supernatural happenings. Built in the early 18th century, Moreton House was owned by a wealthy Russian family who settled in England. As a suitable model for all manner of ghost stories, it is specifically the woman in grey who haunts the vast corridors of this historic mansion. The story begins during the late 19th century when a reputable Russian businessman, Ivan Ivanovich, settled into Moreton House. Ivan was known to be a man of discipline and strong character, but his stern demeanor changed when he met a charming English woman, whom locals refer to as ‘Lady Grey’. Their encounters were kept a secret until the day Ivan disappeared mysteriously leaving the house under Lady Grey’s possession. The residents of Bideford say that after Ivan’s disappearance, each night, Lady Grey would wander the halls of Moreton House, assuming her lover’s return. Even after her death, her spirit was reported to have been seen wandering the halls, waiting for Ivan. The guests and staff members over the years have reported sightings of a woman dressed in grey, sometimes heard crying or calling for an unknown person. The whispers in the corridors, the footsteps when there’s no one around make the air heavy with the presence of something unseen. It’s not only Lady Grey’s spirit that is said to occupy the building; sightings of Ivan have also been reported, wandering restlessly along the hallways, possibly in search for his lost love.
