The Ghostly Gallows of Gibbet Hill

In the vicinity of the coordinates you provided, just around 9 miles north towards Hindhead, Surrey, lies Gibbet Hill, the highest point in Surrey. Gibbet Hill is not just famous for its breathtaking views but it also has a haunting tale of folklore attached to it. In the 1700s, Gibbet Hill was infamous as the execution site of three murderers. The three men, known as the ‘Sailor’s Gang,’ robbed and killed an unknown sailor who was travelling from London to his ship in Portsmouth. After committing the horrific crime, the three fellow travelers, after leading the unsuspecting sailor to the remote location, brutally murdered him and dumped his body in a shallow ditch, leaving his pockets filled with stones to weigh him down. The sailor’s dog was the only witness to the gruesome act, and it is said that the dog sat beside his master’s body and protected it from vultures and other scavengers. When the perpetrators tried to spend the stolen money in a nearby inn, they raised suspicion. The faithful dog tracked them down and helped in their arrest. The sailor’s murderers were hanged on The Gibbet in chains until their corpses rotted away to skeletons. The chilling tale of Gibbet Hill has become a fixture of local folklore. It is believed that on certain dark, quiet nights, the agonizing cries of the three hanged men can still be heard echoing across the hill. Adding to the eerie aura of the place, some residents swear they have seen a phantom dog wandering around, faithfully still protecting its master.
