Venture into Glencoe deep in the Scottish Highlands, and you’re certain to feel the thrill of its folklore, especially in the haunted Glen Coe Manor House. The most famous ghost here is undoubtedly that of The Green Lady. As the story goes, she was a servant girl who, during the 17th Century, had gotten pregnant. The laird, who was also the father of the child, decided to get rid of the ‘problem’ by having her sail away on a boat while being pregnant. Unfortunately, the boat was caught in a storm and the unfortunate lady perished at sea. From then on, the laird was tormented by her apparition appearing in green, always pointing at him accusingly. The tortured laird would eventually take his life in desperation. The Green Lady, however, wasn’t finished. It’s said that she continues to haunt the manor and its surroundings. Even today, there have been numerous sightings of a woman in green around the house, particularly in the location of the old nursery. Visitors often report a feeling of profound sadness accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature. Others claim to hear the distant sound of a woman crying. Some even say they hold conversations with the ghost, who seems to be oblivious to her death. As the story of The Green Lady has passed down through generations, her spectral presence has become a chilling staple of the Glencoe folklore. As a visitor, if you are brave enough, take a walk around the manor and you may just come face to face with one of Scotland’s most well-known ghostly residents.
