The Fateful Journey of Sir Bevis of Hampton

In the quiet English county of Hampshire, a story whispers over the gentle lapping of waters at the port of Southampton, the tale of a hero called Sir Bevis of Hampton. Hampton is the old name of Southampton. This legendary tale takes us back to the 12th Century, when chivalry held sway and knights gained glory battling evil forces. Sir Bevis, the local son of the Earl of Hampton, was our trepid knight. The story begins with a haunting tragedy, the murder of young Bevis’s parents, plotted by their own trusted steward and his mother, who wished to usurp the earship. Infuriated and devastated, Bevis was forced to flee to the dense Arreton forests of Hampshire, where he grew strong and wise under the nurturing hands of Mother Nature for many years.
During his exile, Bevis overcame numerous trials, slaying fierce creatures and enemies. One day he slew a wild boar of massive proportions and it’s believed that the actual skull of this creature can be seen even to this day at the Minstead church, Hampshire. His courage intrigued the stunning princess of Araby, Josian, and they both fell in love. But, their love story was fraught with challenges including banishment and prison, until they were finally united after much tribulation.
Sir Bevis returned to Hampton on the back of his mighty horse, Arundel, and took his revenge on the wicked steward and his conspiring mother. He reclaimed his birthright, ruling Hampton wisely, and championed peace, which defined him as a true knight.
This legendary story still resonates in Hampshire. The name Bevis can be found in various landmarks of this county, from the town of Bevis’s Thorn to the Bevis Marks in the city of Southampton, forever reminding us of the enduring strength and indomitable spirit of Sir Bevis of Hampton.
