The Enchanted Swan of Segeberger See

There’s a mystical tale tied to the waters of Segeberger See, a lake located smack dab in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany. The tale revolves around a magnificent swan often viewed gliding across the surface of the lake. As the story goes, many centuries ago, an enchantress named Lucinda was trapped in the form of this swan by a wicked witch, who was jealous of her beauty and her affectionate relationship with a knight. The enchantress now wanders the lake in the form of this swan, waiting for a knight brave enough to break the curse. One day, a courageous knight passing through Segeberger See heard of this story. Deciding to free Lucinda, the knight sought advice from an old hermit living near the lake. The hermit, wise and insightful, shared that the enchantress could be freed only if a knight could make a promise of unwavering love to the swan under the magical influence of a full moon. Upon following the hermit’s advice, the knight approached the swan on a full moon night and expressed his undying love. To his surprise, the swan transformed into the mesmerizing enchantress Lucinda in front of his eyes. Overwhelmed by her beauty and the enchanting moment, the knight unfortunatey broke his gaze and the enchantress, Lucinda, was returned to her swan form, trapped until someone else could come along and prove their unwavering love. Although the story is an old wives’ tale, travellers and locals alike cast an eye out over the lake in the hope of catching a glimpse of the enchanting swan, hoping that they might be the one to finally free Lucinda from her tragic plight.
