The Earl of Desmond and the Fairy Physician, a Legend of St Patrick’s Cathedral

In the heart of Dublin city, St. Patrick’s Cathedral stands as an iconic testament to Ireland’s rich history, tradition, and folklore. It is here, where the old and the modern blend seamlessly, that the legend of Thomas Fitzgerald, the 11th Earl of Desmond, and the fairy physician takes place. Thomas, known for his pleasant demeanor, was loved by all, including the fairies, a legendary Irish creature known to reside in the bountiful natural landscapes of the country. One day, the Earl fell seriously ill. The best human physicians were unable to diagnose his ailment, let alone cure it. However, a fairy, disguised as a beggar, arrived at the Earl’s castle offering her services. After examining the Earl, the fairy diagnosed him with a magic ailment caused by a vengeful fairy king. The fairy physician concocted a potent potion from herbs and fairy magic, which she instructed to be administered to the Earl. The next day, the Earl recovered completely, amazing the human doctors who had deemed his case hopeless. In gratitude, the Earl gifted the fairy physician with gold and jewels. The fairy, however, refused the treasure, stating that she desired no mortal wealth. Instead, she asked the Earl to construct a house of God in place of his grand castle. Struck by her righteousness, the Earl demolished his castle and made way for the construction of the St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Till date, the splendid cathedral, a symbol of faith and resilience, stands as a testament to the fairy physician’s wish and the Earl’s fulfilling of this noble desire.
