The Banshee of Dunluce Castle

In the heart of County Antrim, precariously perched atop the craggy cliffs of Northern Ireland, rests the mesmerising ruins of Dunluce Castle. Its rich history is filled with tales of noble families, bloody battles, and haunting spirits. One such tale tells of the banshee of Maeve Roe, a tragic figure whose wailing cries are said to still echo throughout the castle in the dead of night. The story dates back to the 16th century, during a time of great upheaval and warring clans. Maeve Roe was the only daughter of Lord McQuillan, the then owner of Dunluce Castle. Maeve was deeply in love with a commoner, Reginald O’Cahan, but her father disapproved, arranging her marriage to a more ‘suitable’ suitor. Resisting her father’s will, Maeve and Reginald sought to elope, departing on a stormy night in a rowboat from Port Roe beneath the castle. Tragically, their boat was overturned by the tumultuous waves, and they were both drowned. In the days and years that followed, many reported hearing a mysterious, mournful cry emanating from the windswept castle cliffs. These cries were attributed to Maeve, who, in death, had become a banshee warning of impending doom. To this day, the ruins of Dunluce Castle attract visitors who are drawn not only to its historic magnitude but to the chilling tales and spectral echoes that lend an eerie quiet to the windswept crags of the North Antrim coast. Even in the stark silence of the surrounding landscape, some claim to hear the faint cry of the banshee drifting on the incessant wind, forever mourning a love lost to the sea.
