The Legend of the Skidby Windmill Ghost

Our story dates back to the late 18th century, revolving around the iconic Skidby Windmill in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This fully working mill, a landmark with a rich history, is associated with intriguing folklore. It’s said to be haunted by a unique entity known as ‘The Miller’s Ghost’. The Phantom Miller, as he’s also known, is rumored to appear on the chilliest and quietest of nights, his presence forever entwined with the eerie whirring of the windmill. The story goes that the original miller, devastated by his wife’s passing, vowed to keep the mill working until his final day as a tribute to her. He devoted his life to the grinding stones and the spinning sails, believing that the rhythm of the mill was a testament to the steady heartbeat of the love he once shared. Residents came to appreciate the comforting regularity of the mill’s activity as a sign of life going on.Then, one cold winter’s day, the windmill suddenly lay quiet, and upon investigation, the villagers found the miller had passed away. Sorrowed, they buried him in the nearby churchyard, paying their respects to the stalwart figure. However, on quiet nights afterwards, many claimed they heard the peculiar sound of the mill, even when there wasn’t enough wind to turn its sails. They say it’s the Phantom Miller keeping his promise, working through the afterlife to keep the heartbeat of the mill alive.Today, the Skidby Windmill is a popular attraction, with a cafe, museum exhibits and fantastic views of the Wolds and the Humber Bridge. And while many visitors come to learn about its history and architecture, there are a few who quietly wonder about the ethereal miller, clinging to this world to keep a token of his love spinning throughout eternity.
