According to locals, the fascinating city of Brasov, Romania, situated at latitude 46.1840561 and longitude 25.2223974, is teeming with insidious supernatural tales and gripping legends, an exciting past that might seem unbelievable. One of the most enduring and thrilling is the Legend of the Haunted Chess. This tale dates back to the late 1600s when Brasov, then known as Kronstadt, was a flourishing heart of trade, culture, and politics. A German chess grandmaster, famed for his undefeated streak and arrogant demeanour, visited the city to challenge the best players. A local opponent of unknown identity, who wore a cloak and a hat that covered his face, accepted the challenge. During the days the mysterious figure outsmarted the grandmaster at every turn, becoming the first to defeat him. Shocked, the grandmaster accused the figure of cheating, to which he replied by raising his hat, revealing a skull underneath – this player was the embodiment of death itself. The grandmaster, overwhelmed by fear, dropped dead on the spot. Some say the ghostly chess game recurs in the centre of Brasov’s main square, making chess pieces move supernaturally. As a lasting reminder of the legend, a giant chessboard was artistically laid into the stone paving of the city center in 2002 where chess enthusiasts could recreate the haunting game, merely hoping not to play against a phantom.
