The Legend of the Dwarfs in the House of Cologne

In the city of Cologne, surrounded by the rich culture and history, resides a quaint tale that has passed down through many generations. Deep within the city’s heart, a local legend of the mystical ‘Heinzelmannchen’, the house dwarfs of Cologne, echos even today. According to the folklore, the dwarfs were diligent creatures known for their craftsmanship. They were believed to dwell within the city, residing in dark corners, beneath floorboards and within the cathedral spires. Such beings were said to come out at night after the residents had gone to bed & perform the household chores, crafts, and labor. The inhabitants of Cologne did nothing more strenuous than providing them with a tasty meal before retiring to bed. But one curious wife decided to catch a glimpse of the industrious beings and strewn dried peas all over the stairs to make the creatures stumble. This nocturnal spectacle startled the dwarfs, leading to their disappearance. From that night forth, they never returned, which explains why the people of Cologne are more industrious than those in many other cities today. The tale of the Heinzelmannchen is a beloved ancestry story, heard and told by many generations, serving as a unique part of Cologne’s rich cultural tapestry.
