The Legend of the Heinzelmaennchen of Cologne

The Heinzelmaennchen are famous German mythical creatures comparably to Gnomes, which were supposed to have lived in the city of Cologne, located at 50.9375° N, 6.9603° E. The story goes that they secretly did all the work of the citizens during the night, so when the people woke up, all their work for the day was already done. This allowed the citizens of Cologne to lead a life of leisure and merriment. The Heinzelmaennchen were so efficient and diligent that they would complete all tasks before the break of dawn. The men would go to their workshops, and the women to their spinning, and there everything was already in order. Their clothes were mended and their rooms supervised. In the shops and stalls, everything was swept, sorted, and tidied up. However, their good deeds did not go without conditions. The citizens were not supposed to seek or disturb them, especially at night. The Heinzelmaennchen disappeared when a tailor’s wife, driven by curiosity, attempted to spy on them. The tailor’s wife scattered peas on the floor to make the Heinzelmaennchen slip and fall, revealing their presence. Feeling betrayed and disturbed, the Heinzelmaennchen left the city forever, leaving the people to do their chores by themselves. This mythical tale encapsulates the by-gone era of simplicity and harmony, and the unmistakable human trait of taking for granted simple yet significant things. Today, this story lives on and is the subject of various poems, songs, and children’s stories, symbolising the city’s cultural past.
