The Witch of Skerry Rock

Just off the coast of the quaint village of Ballycastle, on the stunningly beautiful North Antrim coastline of Northern Ireland, lies a rocky outpost known as Skerry Rock. Despite its enchanting sight and the soothing sound of waves lapping it, the rock hides a darker history, cloaked in the shadows of folklore. Local lore has it that in the 1600s, a witch used to live on Skerry Rock. The witch had a reputation for causing havoc among the local fishermen and was said to have the ability to control the sea, the weather, and the abundant fishes in the region. When she was in a good mood, she would calm the sea and guide the fish towards the fishermen’s nets, granting them a bountiful catch. But if she was in anger, she would stir up violent storms and empty their nets, causing devastation and, at times, loss of life. The tales tell that sometimes she would disguise herself as a beautiful maiden to lure unsuspecting sailors, only to transform into a hag and drag them beneath the waves. After many years of suffering, the villagers finally sought the help of a powerful cleric, who managed to bind the witch to Skerry Rock, stopping her from causing further chaos. Nevertheless, on stormy nights, it is said that one can still hear the witch’s hopeless weeps carried by the wind. This tale has been passed down through generations, etching a lasting mark on Ballycastle’s local folklore.
