In the majestic surroundings of Loch Awe, stands a stark and imposing structure known as Kilchurn Castle. It’s a 15th-century castle that has seen countless battles, stories of chivalry, and dramatic sagas. But of all its folklore, one of the most intriguing tales is of the Green Lady. The Green Lady of Kilchurn is said to be a tragic ghost that continues to wander the castle in search of her lost love. As the story goes, the Green Lady was an enchanting woman who caught the eye of the Lord of the castle. However, she realized that she didn’t love the Lord, but his brother. In the depth of their clandestine love affair, the Lady was struck down by a vicious illness. On her deathbed, she made her true lover promise to bury her in a green dress, symbolic of their secret love. She also implored him to place a single white rose on her grave every year as a testament to their undying affection. The brother fulfilled her wishes, but one year, he was unable to visit her grave because of a severe storm. Overcome by grief, he died that night, with his last words being his lover’s name. Since then, the Green Lady can sometimes be seen wandering the castle and weeping mournfully, forever searching in vain for her lover’s return and her coveted white rose. Since then, many visitors have reported unexplainable occurrences, and some even claim to have witnessed the apparition of the Green Lady. Though a tale of profound tragedy, the love story of the Green Lady adds an intriguing layer to the rich historical tapestry of Kilchurn Castle.
