In the heart of the Scottish Highlands, nestled amidst the towering mountains and emerald green valleys lies the small village of Glencoe. This place is rife with tales of haunting and ghostly encounters. But none is more chilling or tragic than the legend of a spectre that is said to be the forlorn ghost of a massacre survivor. It was during the bitter winter of 1692 when the most horrific atrocity in the history of the Scottish Highlands took place – the infamous Massacre of Glencoe. That fateful night, the members of Clan Campbell accepted the hospitality of Clan MacDonald, but with a treacherous intent. Under the guise of friendship and in gross violation of the Scots’ law of hospitality, they slaughtered their unsuspecting hosts as they slept. Nearly 40 members of Clan MacDonald were murdered. A figure is said to stalk the area where the MacDonalds were slain and can be seen on the anniversary of the massacre. He is cloaked head to foot in the traditional Highland tartan. His figure appears solid, not a ‘misty’ apparition. The spectral figure is thought to be a member of the MacDonald Clan, forever be trapped in the location of his untimely and brutal end. For centuries, locals and visitors have claimed to sense a palpable hollowness in the area, feeling a deep sense of sorrow despite the stunning scenery. Sightings of the apparition have become less frequent in recent years, but every now and then someone will report an encounter with the Ghost of Glencoe, keeping the legend alive for generations
